Graduate Strategic Policy Advisor [New Zealand]

Following an internal appointment, we are looking for a new Graduate Strategic Policy Advisor, and we're hoping that's you!

What we can offer…

An exciting opportunity to join a successful, innovative and award-winning Team and Council, with the community at the heart in all we do.

We understand that people like to work differently. Work-life balance, wellbeing and job flexibility is important to us, it's one of our top priorities! Waipā offers both flexible work arrangements and a blended work model when it comes to working from home and in the office.

In this role you'll be offered a diverse work portfolio, with the opportunity to engage with our internal and external customers and to influence change in our communities.

Here at Waipā we believe in recognising, growing and developing our own talent to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, so development, performance and remuneration check-ins are a given!

Who are Waipā…?

You could say we're biased as we believe the Waipā district is the heart of the mighty Waikato, but don't take our word for it here are some of the reasons why…

Waipā is known for its high-performance sports from Rowing, Cycling, Equestrian and everything in between. However, if discovering what's on your doorstep sounds more like you then a great way to explore our district is through Te Ara Wai: Journeys, a self-guided tour of culturally significant sites of local and national importance, discover unique stories told by local experts. Waipā is renowned for some of New Zealand's top natural playgrounds, from Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari to Lake Karāpiro with all its water sports and recreational activities to numerous parks, reserves, walks and cycle trails including the 65km Te Awa River Ride.

And did we mention the progressive communities with vibrant cafes and boutique shops?

It's no wonder we are experiencing phenomenal growth and by 2050, it is anticipated it will be home to an additional 25,000 people.

An exciting time to be joining our Strategy team…

There is a whole heap of exciting and challenging work on the go at the moment; the reform of the Resource Management Act (RMA), a Future for Local Government review, the development of a district-wide Spatial Plan - Ahu Ake website for more information and the preparation of the 2024-34 Long Term Plan (LTP).

Graduate Strategic Policy Advisor (Strategic Planner)

As the newest Graduate Strategic Policy Advisor (Strategic Planner), you'll assist the Strategy team to deliver on key strategic projects that drive the future direction of our district and deliver on the Council's Vision and Community Outcomes as well as be involved in the development, implementation, monitoring and review of external-facing strategies, plans and policies. Bringing your creativity, enthusiasm to learn and charisma you will also support the Manager Strategy and wider team in delivering comprehensive stakeholder engagement strategies that champion our vision of "Waipā Home of Champions - Building Connected Communities".

This role will work within a team of strategic specialists and you will be highly motivated and collaborative with the ability to 'think outside the box' to help identify innovative and forward-thinking opportunities. You will have exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.

Ideally you will have:

  • University degree level qualification in a relevant field e.g. Strategic Management, Law, Public Policy, or Planning;
  • A keen interest in contributing to project management, strategy and policy.

This is a development position with a path to eventually progress into a Strategic Policy Advisor level role. There will be regular performance and salary reviews.
